Receive SMS When Someone IM’s You »

pidgin If you are using Pidgin, an open source multi-protocol Instant Messaging client. Karthik of DailyApps has found a nice little SMS Notification Plugin that can notify you by mobile phone SMS when someone tries to contact you by Pidgin and you don’t respond within a specified time frame.

The SMS, is sent via Google Calendar, the SMS doesn’t give you the actual text of the message. It gives just the name of the contact and the date / time the message was sent to you. If multiple contacts leave messages, they will be all bundled together and sent to you in one SMS.

Here’s how to get this working

  • Pidgin installed on your computer.
  • A Google account (with SMS reminders enabled on Google Calendar).
  • Google supported mobile phone network to receive SMS.
  • Your PC synched with NTP (Network Time Protocol).

Installation :

For Windows Users :

Download the plug-in and place the “gsms.dll” file in the Pidgin plugins folder of Pidgin on your PC. Then open Pidgin, go to “tools” menu then “plugins” and activate the plugin.

For Linux Users :

copy gsms.so

to

~/.purple/plugins

Configuration Screenshot :

Configuration Settings:

Gmail account: your gmail e-mail (example: xyz@gmail.com).
Password: password for specified account.
Timeout: Number of minutes for gsms to collect chats until it sends them.
Calendar feed path: Which calendar to use (example: “/private/full” translates to: http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/xyz@gmail.com/private/full)

Download gSMS Pidgin Plugin.

blogger- grandcentral-1

Google has launched a new service with which you can receive phone calls and post voicemails right on your blog. Though GrandCentral is currently in a private beta test and currently only available from within the US.

When you add GrandCentral’s WebCall button to your blog, your readers can easily call your phone or leave voicemails without ever seeing your telephone number. This is similar to what many do with a Contact-Us form, by hiding away their e-mails id’s to avoid privacy concerns and spam.

You can screen calls, either accepting them or sending them to voicemail, and you can even block unwanted callers altogether similar to comments. You can receive voicemail notifications by email or SMS, access your voicemail from a mobile phone or computer.

All your voicemail are kept in a visual online inbox that is easy to manage, there is no limit on the number of voice messages you can store.

Check out the features of GrandCentral here.

You can get an invite from here, if based in US or a user of GrandCentral.

I think this could be a more better service if this were to be present inside Gmail. Let’s wait and see if Google integrates this into Gmail. What do you think of this service from Goolge.
