Do we need Gmail Invites Anymore

Google in February 2007, opened its doors to get a Gmail account without the need of an invitation. Did you observe your Gmail account would still have the option of sending an invitation to your friend. I doubt, if Google has any plans to close its doors and the need for invitations may again arise, or did the Gmail team just forget to remove that or, It is there because Gmail is still in the beta stage.
