A new world record was set for making a GSM call from the highest point on earth by Rod Baber, A British climber made the call on Monday 21st May 2007, at 29,035 feet / 8848 meters on the highest peak of Mount Everest saying “Its cold, it’s fantastic, and the Himalayas are everywhere.” using his MOTO Z8 GSM mobile handset. The world’s highest peak now receives mobile phone coverage because The China Telecom installed a phone mast at the base camp in Rongbuk.

If such services are available at all mountain peaks around the world, it could really be a life saver to climbers as help could be just a phone call away. There are two things of importance to take note of that is the battery life of the phone, and the phone should be capable of working in the extreme weather conditions.
